HIV/AIDS mortality rate steadily increasing, 72 dead this year

The number of deaths caused by HIV/AIDS in Bali has been steadily increasing year on year, with 72 people recorded as having died of the disease already this year.

Data from Sanglah Central Hospital’s VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing) clinic shows that the number of deaths by October was more than twice the number recorded in 2004.

Nyoman Rimben and Nyoman Sari are two out of as many as 10 small food and souvenir vendors who have suffered that marginalization after construction began on a five-star hotel, Chateau de Bali, on Mimba beach, Karangasem.

There is a growing need for them to collaborate with different actors to link into the financial services and modern markets.

The issue was discussed at the “Inclusion of Small Producers in the Value Chain: From Field Evidence to Action”, a workshop jointly organized by Belgium-based Vredeseilanden (VECO), United Kingdom-based International Institute for the Environment and Development (IIED), and Netherlands-based Cordaid.

With undisguised joy, Aryani Putri and her friends immersed themselves in the three boxes of books, donated through Bali Youth Corner and delivered by Putu Eka Dharmartha.

Putri, an eighth-grader at the state’s SMP 10 junior high school and her friends, Gede Santika and Mei Rismawati, carefully began cataloging the 250 books, which consisted of novels, comic books, school books and magazines.

During their one and a half years in Bali, Rogier Eijkens and his family have gone to Bedugul six times for a holiday. For Eijkens, a Dutch citizen residing in Padanggalak Sanur, holidaying in Bedugul is much better than going to Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua and the like.

“If we come here for a holiday, my kids can learn about nature,” said Eijkens, who has two children with his Indonesian wife. In Bedugul, he went on, visitors can learn about plants, for example, the species, where the plants come from and what they are useful for.

She has not yet reached her 10th birthday, but Ni Wayan Cenik has already had an adult’s burden laid on her shoulders.

The young child works from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. and after a brief rest in her cramped house, she will return to work another shift until 8 p.m. On the average, Cenik works nine hours per day.

Cenik is just one of many child laborers in Bali. Her life reflects the hardships these children must endure and survive.

Ni Putu Suartini, a member of the island’s Commission for the Protection of Children (KPAI), said the child tukang suun of Peken Badung had never received their basic rights — the right to proper education and the right to healthcare services.

The 2002 Law on the Protection of Children stipulates that children under the age of 18 have the rights to healthcare services, social security, education and play and recreational activities.
